MASON’S ANKLE NOT FRACTURED
St. John’s swingman Anthony Mason Jr. was in a walking boot and in considerably better spirits yesterday after X-rays taken on his left ankle revealed no fracture.
Mason put in an offensive rebound and landed awkwardly on the right foot of LIU’s David Hicks with 5:58 left in the Red Storm’s 68-56 win Wednesday night in Carnesecca Arena.
It was his first game of the season for Mason, who missed the first three contests after suffering a high-ankle sprain of the same ankle on Nov. 3. St. John’s spokesman Mark Fratto said because of the swelling in the joint, it was uncertain if Mason had suffered a new injury or re-injured the previous sprain.
Mason got ice and compression treatment yesterday and will be examined again in 2-3 days. He is expected to miss at least three weeks, just as he missed three weeks after suffering the first injury.
Mason was rusty in his first game back, hitting 2-of-9 shots and going 0-for-3 behind the arc. He was pressing to make something happen rather than let the game come to him, which is common when a player returns.
St. John’s is 4-0 going into its first road game Saturday when it plays at Miami.

Guard Larry Wright took two treatments for a mild hip pointer suffered early in the second half. Center Tomas Jasiulionis (strained left thigh muscle) is ready to play.
