Max Kellerman’s first day co-hosting during the morning drive on ESPN Radio started out with a whisper.

Kellerman, tabbed to replace Zubin Mehenti alongside Jay Williams and Keyshawn Johnson, after Stephen A. Smith sought greener pastures in the debate department on “First Take,” began his tenure on the show speaking into a muted microphone.

“Congratulations, you will be with us for the next four hours — let’s see how it goes,” Johnson told Kellerman. For the sake of the trio, hopefully this was a case of getting technical hiccups out of the way rather than an ominous sign.

The morning national drive slot on ESPN Radio is now in its third iteration since Mike Greenberg left “Mike & Mike” in 2017. Mike Golic stayed on to host with Trey Wingo for a few years, before the show was replaced with “Keyshawn, J-Will, and Zubin” for last football season.

Now, the network surely hopes for much longer continuity with its new program.
