The owners of the horse that was named winner of the Kentucky Derby only to have the title taken back minutes later have asked a federal judge to reinstate the victory, according to a published report.
Gary and Mary West say the stewards of the fabled competition broke their own rules in disqualifying their horse Maximum Security last month, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Friday.
Maximum Security led the pack in most of the race but lost the title after being accused of a foul.
The Wests say judges failed to prove the foul altered the outcome of the race, among other claims, according to the Courier-Journal.
“I think this is the most egregious disqualification in the history of horse racing, and not just because it’s our horse,” Gary West previously told the Associated Press.
