Mayweather 146, Marquez 142
LAS VEGAS—Floyd Mayweather weighed in two pounds about the agreed upon 144-pound weight limit for his welterweight fight with Juan Manuel Marquez Saturday night and will receive a “substantial” financial penalty that will be added Marquez’s purse.
Marquez, who is moving up from 135 pounds, weighed 142 on Friday. Mayweather stepped on the scales at 146. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, would not reveal the amount of the penalty Mayweather must pay, but said, “His advisors and his team were quite upset he’s going to have to come up with substantial amount of money.”
The fight has been promoted as a welterweight bout where the normal limit is 147 pounds. But because Marquez was moving up in weight, 144 pounds was agreed upon as a catch weight. Penalties were built into the contract in case either fighter came in above that mark.
“Any pound or part of pound in excess would be subject to substantial weight penalty,” Schaefer said.
Forcing Mayweather to dry out to make the 144 limit was seen as one of the few advantages Marquez might have in the bout. Now that it’s clear Mayweather will enter the ring a much bigger man, Marquez became an even bigger underdog.
“Sometimes matters and sometimes size doesn’t matter,” Schaefer said. “I don’t’ know what the implications are. But this was no surprise to me. This was no surprise to Marquez and this was no surprise to Mayweather.”
