MAYWEATHER CALLS FOR REIGN
Floyd Mayweather isn’t waiting on the court of public opinion to decide who is boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighter, following Roy Jones’ loss to Antonio Tarver Saturday night.
“I feel I’m No. 1 and [Bernard] Hopkins is No. 2,” Mayweather said yesterday during a press conference to hype his fight against DeMarcus Corley Saturday night in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.
HBO will televise the bout beginning at 9:45 p.m.
“Bernard is a good fighter, but he’s been beaten by the guy [Jones] who was No. 1, and he’s only fought in one weight class,” Mayweather continued. “I’ve [won titles] at 130 [pounds], then I fought the best guy at 135. I always knew there would come a day that everybody that had me as the No. 2 pound-for-pound was going to eat their words.”
At 31-0 with 21 knockouts, Mayweather has the credentials to back his boasts. He’ll move up to the 140-pound division to take on Chop Chop Corley (28-2-1, 16 KOs), a former WBO junior welterweight champion.
Mayweather guaranteed what happened to Jones in Las Vegas last Saturday night won’t happen to him in Atlantic City.
“I don’t want DeMarcus Corley to think he’s Tarver and I’m Roy Jones because it’s nothing like that,” Mayweather said. “If he gets that in the back of his mind, that’s going to get him clipped real quick.”
HBO will show a replay of Jones-Tarver II following Mayweather-Corley.
