Sunday’s $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar – dubbed the “Pacific Carnage” by trainer Bob Baffert after recent injuries knocked out his colt, Real Quiet, as well as Victory Gallop – lost its third big horse yesterday morning when Mazel Trick broke down during a morning workout.

Trained by Bobby Frankel, Mazel Trick fractured the sesamoids (ankle bones) in his right foreleg and was taken off the track in a horse ambulance. The injury was not considered life-threatening, and the horse is to undergo surgery today.

Mazel Trick had won his last four starts, the last two by a combined 11 lengths, including a track-record performance in the Triple Bend Handicap at Belmont.

The injury to Mazel Trick could prompt the connections of Catienus, currently stabled at Saratoga, to fly out for the race.
