There are 55 years between them, but Jon Court and Long Range Toddy have been a strong match entering Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

Court will make history, becoming the oldest jockey to ride in the Derby at 58 years old, as Long Range Toddy has 30-to-1 odds to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

“Being at this stage of my career, it’s remarkable that I’m here,” Court said, according to WDRB in Louisville. “I’m getting a lot of coverage for being the oldest rider to ride in the Kentucky Derby, going down in history. It’s only by one year.”

Bobby Baird is the current record holder after riding at the age of 57 in the 1978 Derby, per the Associated Press. The oldest jockey to win the race is Bill Shoemaker, who rode Ferdinand to victory in 1986 at age 54.

Court and Long Range Toddy won the Rebel Stakes in March, but the stakes will be raised Saturday in the biggest race of them all.

“I’m humble enough to really appreciate it and absorb all the excitement that I possibly can, because most riders don’t achieve this particular level of racing at this age,” said Court, who began racing in 1980 and has more than 4,000 career wins. “But I’ve been youthful my entire career, and I hope to continue that for the duration.”

Court first rode in the Derby on Archarcharch in 2011, placing 15th after entering with 12-to-1 odds. Saturday will mark his fourth big race at Churchill Downs.

In 2007, the Florida native won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, voted on by fellow jockeys for the rider “whose careers and personal character earn esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing.”

Meanwhile, Court is trying to make history in more ways than one.

“I’d like to see, as many others who have been supporting me, the oldest rider to not only have ridden it, but to win it,” Court said.
