A new St. John’s head coaching candidate has emerged … and it’s a very familiar name.

Metta World Peace — known in his St. John’s days as Ron Artest — has unofficially thrown his hat in the ring, tweeting his interest in the opening Wednesday night. World Peace tweeted three times about the job, saying he felt former coach Chris Mullin and his staff did a great job, and if he was brought in, he would take the position.

When told he should get an assistant coach’s position first, World Peace responded: “Not necessary.” Another person tweeted at him that he’s been eyeing the job and it’s time, he wrote: “Yes. Easy job. It’s NYC.”

Of course, bringing in a former legend without any head-coaching experience didn’t work well the last time for St. John’s with Mullin, who stepped down on Tuesday after four seasons.

World Peace, 39, led St. John’s to the Elite Eight in 1999 as a sophomore before going pro, and getting drafted in the first round (16th overall) by the Bulls. The Queens native last played in the NBA in 2017. He has worked as a player development coach with the South Bay Lakers, the Los Angeles Lakers’ G-League team.

The leaders for the St. John’s job, sources believe, are Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley and Iona’s Tim Cluess.
