First Mexico manager Javier Aguirre kicked an opponent. Now he got hit with a three-match suspension for his actions during Thursday night’s Gold Cup Group C match against Panama. The Mexican federation also got a $25,000 fine for the bench’s conduct toward Panamanian midfielder Ricardo Phillips, touching off an ugly fight among the fans.

Aguirre’s suspension starts with Mexico’s last group game tomorrow vs. Guadeloupe. He won’t be eligible to return until the July 26 final at Giants Stadium _ that is, if Mexico actually gets that far. The way El Tri is playing, that’s no sure thing. And he’s still awaiting a sanction from his own federation after his brain cramp.

Aguirre started the brawl in the 80th minute of the 1-1 tie. Phillips had been dribbling near the bench when ref Joel Aguilar whistled the play dead. Aguirre stuck out his leg _ ostensibly to block the ball _ but got Phillips on the leg and sent him stumbling. The midfielder turned and pushed Aguirre. Then Mexico’s bench personnel shoved the Panamanian, and a fight started, with the crowd throwing debris and delaying the game.
