Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend is a busy one in high school basketball. The boys have the Big Apple Basketball Invitational on Saturday and Monday. The girls have the New York Post CHSAA vs. PSAL Girls Basketball Invitational on Sunday.
Not to be overshadowed, though, is the girls basketball Mika/Crown M.L. King Classic at Medgar Evers College (1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn).
Here’s the schedule for the event hosted by Medgar Evers HS and coach Barney Davis:
10 a.m. – Bedford Academy vs. Brooklyn Collegiate
12p.m. – Medgar Evers vs. Truman
1:30 p.m. – Banneker vs. West 50th Street Campus
3 p.m. – Lafayette vs. School of the Future
If you haven’t seen any of these teams yet, they’re worth a look. Bedford Academy, Brooklyn Collegiate and Lafayette are three of the best teams in PSAL Class B. Medgar Evers, West 50th Street and School of the Future are top teams in ‘A,’ and Truman and Banneker are mid-level teams in Class AA, just a notch below the top eight or so.
You’ll also see some future Division I players who are flying under the radar. Brooklyn Collegiate sophomore Emonni Cropper is a budding superstar. Jasmin Robinson and Ashley Castle of Medgar Evers could play for any team in the city. West 50th Street’s 6-foot-5 center Justine Perry is headed to Long Island University.
It faces some stiff competition with St. Michael Academy playing Bishop Ford in nearby Park Slope, but it’s definitely worth a look.
