MIKE, AL HURTING
MET NOTES
The injury news was doubly depressing at Shea Stadium yesterday.
Mike Cameron’s revelation that he has a torn ligament in his right hand was followed by indications that Al Leiter will be bumped from his start Saturday due to a tender shoulder, and possibly land on the DL.
If there’s any silver lining, it’s that neither player is contemplating surgery for the time being. But that doesn’t mean things are OK.
Cameron has been playing with a bum hand since he slid into home on May 5 against San Francisco. He saw a hand specialist yesterday and has been instructed to follow up with treatment.
“Might as well sacrifice something on my body to kind of put it together for this ballclub,” Cameron said.
Cameron’s pinkie and ring finger are affected by the injury, and he’s been cognizant of not getting jammed at the plate. Hence, he’s been starting his swing too early and often has trouble holding up.
“I’ll get by with it, man,” he said. “What else can I do?”
Leiter last pitched May 11. He was bumped from his last start due to shoulder tendinitis and is progressing slowly but surely. He said his side session yesterday was OK and said he could pitch Saturday if there was a playoff race scenario, but there isn’t.

Art Howe decided to move Ty Wigginton from third base to second base last night, and it was hard to figure out the logic. Todd Zeile played third.
Wigginton came through the minors as a second baseman.
