Among the many offerings of Mike Francesa’s app to justify its exorbitant price: Access to absurd Mike Francesa excuses for letting you down.
The legendary radio voice, attempting to be a digital media maven, was nowhere to be found after the Yankees’ 6-2 win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS. According to the official Francesa Chronicle, @BackAftaThis, Francesa had promised all week he would be taking his takes live in the aftermath of the game, an enormous New York and national story.
Instead, one of the few perks of the $98.99-per-year app — postgame Francesa — was canceled without announcement. The explanation came Sunday, when his fans learned that a 6-2, seventh-inning Yankees lead in Fenway Park constituted a blowout.
“One swing, turn out the lights. That was it — that was when I decided not to do a postgame last night,” Francesa said, referring to Gary Sanchez’s two-run home run that just removed the Yankees from a save situation, thereby apparently making it a landslide. “See, if the game’s a blowout, I don’t do a postgame on the app, and that’s when I canceled the postgame is right when he hit the home run.
“I said, no postgame,” he said on Sunday, not Saturday, with no notice to his fans that a decision had been made. “No reason to have a postgame in an easy win. If you have a tough loss or a very close win and there’s a lot to talk about that game, you need to have it.”
The “Mike’s On” app currently offers subscribers access to a simulcast of his WFAN show (a radio program that is free). He also does his Sunday NFL show as an app exclusive, and has done a Saturday college football program. And he promised to go live after big events, but the whims of Francesa have proven to be a tough gamble for $8.99 per month.
