MLS commissioner Don Garber all but said if Montreal can get their stadium issues worked out, they’ll get an expansion club AFTER 2011.

“It’s not happening in 2011; it’ll happen sometime after that,” Garber said. “But I’d like to see three teams in Canada.”

He pegged the USL Montreal Impact as being in pole position for for an expansion club _ provided Montreal’s Saputo Stadium can get brought up to snuff.

“We’re in discussions with (team owners) Joey Saputo and his family. The next step for us is to get public support to expand and renovate that stadium,” Garber said. “Without that we’re not going to be able to go to Montreal, since that stadium can’t really support what we think a Montreal MLS team will be.” Garber said the delay in getting the stadium up to speed will keep Montreal from joining USL clubs Portland and Vancouver in making the jump to MLS in 2011. Still, he made it pretty clear Montreal is more of a when than an if.

Would you love to see a third team in Canada? Think it’ll create great rivalries? Do you think it’ll do the same thing for Cadana’s always-underachieving national team what MLS did for the U.S.? And if the Wilpons never recover enough from Bernie Madoff, do you someday see New York’s USL team making the jump to MLS instead? Hollar at us…
