This is hard to watch.

MMA fighter Willem Smith — a.k.a “The Viking” — suffered a gruesome leg injury during his bout with Ivan Strydom at Extreme Fighting Championship 92 on Saturday.

In the first round of the fight in Johannesburg, South Africa, Smith’s lower right leg snapped after a kick to his opponent. He went to take a step back on the same leg and fell when it folded and collapsed under him.

Smith laid on the floor of the octagon while his right foot dangled in the air, and his bone protruded through his leg.

Strydom stood still when Smith delivered the kick and stopped fighting when he noticed his opponent had been seriously injured. The referee was quick to suspend the fight when Smith’s leg “shattered,” according to an announcer on the broadcast.

WARNING: Graphic footage and images below.

Smith appeared to be in good spirits in the aftermath of injury. EFC shared a Twitter photo of the fighter on a stretcher, raising a thumbs-up to the camera. An IV bag appeared to be in his lap.

He was pictured shaking hands with fellow South African MMA fighter Garreth McLellan.

EFC also tweeted closeup photos of Smith’s lower leg injury that showed his foot bending the opposite way.
