As Albany heads into the end of a legislative term defined largely by scandals, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has the chance to cap it with a decision that would put his personal stamp on his chamber.

One small issue sits outside the usual ideological crossfire: making New York the last state to legalize mixed martial arts.

New York already allows amateur MMA contests. Legalization of pro fights would be a bonanza for city establishments like Madison Square Garden and the Barclay Center — and an even greater boost for venues in beleaguered upstate cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

The Senate has OK’d MMA multiple times. Gov. Cuomo hails it as “a big sport, and it’s growing.” It could mean up to $135 million in economic activity — $33 million upstate.

None of that is news to Carl Heastie. Before becoming speaker, he co-sponsored MMA legalization. If he lets the bill come to the floor, it’ll pass with over 100 votes.

Why become speaker if you can’t push forward legislation that you know full well is in the best interests of your state? Show New York that it’s a new day, Mr. Speaker.
