Shane Mosley is eyeing a fight with Floyd Mayweather next year and proposing the winner claim most of the purse. By George Willis
Shane Mosley is eyeing a fight with Floyd Mayweather early next year if he can get past Miguel Cotto and his father Jack Mosley wouldnât mind if the percentage of the purse were based on the outcome.
âYou can do a 55-45 with the winner getting 55,â said Jack Mosley of a possible fight with Mayweather. âEverything is negotiable. Youâve got to be creative. Let the winner get the most money. Or we can even do winner take all. If you think youâre going to win, letâs do it. If he doesnât think heâs going to win, he ainât going to do it.â
A fight with Mayweather could be the final challenge of Shane Mosleyâs boxing career. âIf he beats Mayweather, who is there to fight?â Jack Mosley said. âItâs about money now. So whoâs going to bring the money?â
The prospect of fighting Mayweather is one of the motivating factors for Mosley not to look past Cotto. âYou donât want to look past this fight because this fight can take us to Floyd Mayweather, which would be a big fight,â Jack Mosley said. âHeâs popular. Shaneâs popular. Floyd runs his mouth a lot. Thatâs what people want to see. So that makes it a big fight.â
Actually, boxing fans have Mayweather to thank for Cotto-Mosley, according to Top Rank president Todd duBoef, who said Mayweather had his choice of Mosley or Cotto, but instead will face Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas. Cotto and Mosley are âfighting because Mayweather didnât want to fight either of them,â duBoef said. âThere was a deal done for Mayweather to fight Mosley going into the Oscar fight, and he didnât want to go through with that. I understand why. He wanted to take the easiest fight for the most money and tell everybody how âIâm pound for pound the best fighter who ever lived.â Hatton couldnât go five rounds with either Cotto or Mosley.â
