Scenes of carnage out of the movie “Warhorse” occurred in the first race at Belmont Park on Thursday, the $50,000 William Entenmann Memorial Steeplechase at 2 ¼ miles, when one horse fell over a fence on the backside, then four more went down over fences in the final stretch run, and another left the course.
Only six of the 12 runners in the field finished the race. Dr. Wheat was euthanized on racetrack, and the 7-year-old gelding Birthday Beau was vanned off. Several riders, after lying motionless following the spills, were carried off the track and taken away by ambulances. Their condition is not yet known.
