It’s going to be a little longer before NASCAR drivers start their engines again.

The circuit announced Monday it is postponing all races through May 3 to adhere to the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines calling for people to avoid or cancel gatherings of 50 or more. President Trump also said Monday that gatherings of more than 10 people should be avoided.

NASCAR “plans to return racing in Martinsville” on May 9, and wants to complete its full season.

One of the last professional sports organizations to suspended action, NASCAR already had postponed two races, including one this coming weekend. They added more postponements, as it said the “health and safety” of fans is NASCAR’s “most important priority.”

“We appreciated the patience of our fans and we look forward to returning to the racetrack,” NASCAR said in a statement. “We intend to hold all 36 races this season, with future rescheduling soon to be determined as we continue to monitor this situation closely with public health officials and medical experts.”

The announcement comes with all major U.S-based sports leagues either cancelling or suspending action because of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the UFC postponing its next next three cards and WWE moving WrestleMania 36 to it Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.
