First, Alabama loses to Ohio State in the inaugural College Football Playoff. Now the Crimson Tide’s string of having the nation’s top-recruiting class comes to a close at four.

It seems like Steve Sarkisian has USC headed back to title-contender status after a huge score during an entertaining National Signing Day on Wednesday. The Trojans snagged three five-star prospects — top-ranked cornerback Iman Marshall, No. 4 defensive end Rasheem Green and No. 2 outside linebacker John Houston — to claim the top spot in Rivals.com’s recruiting rankings.

USC’s crosstown rival UCLA also made its mark, landing blue-chip quarterback Josh Rosen and five-star running back Soso Jamabo, on top of Cordell Broadus, the son of hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg. Tennessee, looking to get its program back on track, finished a surprising fifth with four five-star signees. Defending champion Ohio State continued to add to its embarrassment of riches, procuring the ninth-ranked class in the country.

Jim Harbaugh was hired at Michigan just five weeks ago, leaving him little time to put together a formidable class. And while Michigan’s 14-man group was rated 49th overall, Harbaugh did bring in six four-star recruits. New Florida coach Jim McElwain did a fine job rebounding after a slow start to the day, garnering the services of top-rated offensive tackle Martez Ivey and No. 2 defensive end CeCe Jefferson after losing out on defensive end Byron Cowart, the No. 1 rated player in the country.

Kyle Flood landed the ninth-ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten, according to Rivals, highlighted by Florida defensive end Marques Ford — the Scarlet Knights’ lone four-star recruit — and Florida defensive back Jarius Adams, who picked Rutgers over Michigan and Wisconsin. The 25-man class has a distinct local flavor with two city stars (Erasmus Hall linebacker Deonte Roberts and Grand Street Campus defensive tackle Kamaal Seymour) and six others from New Jersey.
