Tom Coughlin didn’t seem too happy with Jalen Ramsey and Telvin Smith this week, and the NFLPA isn’t all that thrilled with Coughlin because of it.
The Jacksonville Jaguars executive vice president aired his grievances with the star players’ absence from the team’s voluntary camp this week, saying “Quite frankly, all of our players should be here.”
Coughlin’s failure to understand the “voluntary” part of the workout caught the attention of the Players’ Association, specifically president Eric Winston.
“Our CBA definition of voluntary is the same as the actual definition of voluntary and prohibits anyone from threatening players to participate in voluntary workouts,” Winston told Pro Football Talk. “This is precisely the reason players negotiated strict work rules and bright lines when it comes to offseason activities. We know, from experience, that not all coaches and executives will adhere to them and we always pursue any violations to protect our rules.”
According to the CBA, team officials cannot make players feel offseason workout programs are mandatory, nor is their standing with the club dependent on their presence. Should the NFL agree that the ex-Giants coach crossed the line with his comments, the Jags could pay the price in fines and/or lost draft picks.
Ramsey and Smith are free to do whatever it is they’re doing until training camp opens, because, as Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone said earlier this week, “It’s a voluntary period; it’s an option.”
Make no mistake, it’s an option Ramsey is not exercising, as his agent David Mulugheta explained.
“To be clear, Jalen Ramsey is exactly where Jalen should be during his off season,” he tweeted. “He’s spending time with his young daughter & family while training in his hometown of Nashville. In addition the Jags are fully aware of why he is not taking part in the voluntary off season program.”
