Former trainer Victor “Lefty” Nickerson, best known for helping develop former claimer John Henry into one of racing’s all-time greats, died Friday at his home in Smithtown. He was 75.

Nickerson first took over training John Henry when he was a 4-year-old in 1979, winning 3-of-8 starts, after which the gelding was sent to Ron McAnally in California. Whenever John Henry returned to New York, he was placed in the care of Nickerson, who saddled him to win the Sword Dancer Handicap and Jockey Club Gold Cup. From 1980-84, John Henry won two Horse of the Year titles and four championships as best male turf horse.

Nickerson retired after suffering a stroke nine years ago. His former assistant, Hall-of-Fame trainer Dick Mandella, won yesterday’s Dubai World Cup with Pleasantly Perfect. After the race, Mandella dedicated the victory to Nickerson’s memory. (p.70 Metro)
