Trainer Allen Jerkens grins with embarrassment whenever someone calls him the “Giant Killer,” a nickname he earned by posting big upsets in stakes races.

But the label isn’t going away anytime soon, especially after Jerkens saddled 19-1 longshot Notoriety to win yesterday’s Grade 3, $75,000 Jaipur Stakes, going seven furlongs on turf yesterday at Belmont Park.

Ridden by Jose Espinoza, Notoriety, a former $35,000 claimer, went right to the front and battled through fractions of :23 for the first quarter-mile and :45.3 for the half. He opened a length lead after six furlongs in 1:09, then held off the late charge of Optic Nerve to win by a neck. Cryptic Rascal was another nose back in third.

Notoriety paid $41, topping a $258 exacta and $1,966 trifecta. His final time was a sharp 1:21.1.
