The top teams have taken care of business for the most part, winning games they are supposed to win. The bottom ones? Well that’s another. A wild season only got wilder last week.

Francis Lewis is up to No. 8 courtesy of losses by Construction and Susan Wagner. That ranking could be short-lived, though, with Wagner coming to Fresh Meadows on Saturday. The Falcons, Construction, St. Joseph by the Sea and Moore Catholic will compete Monday and Tuesday at the Mudville Softball Missy Lasowski Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament in upstate Herkimer.

Here’s how the rankings look:

1. Tottenville (7-0) (Last week: 1)

Nicole Palase and Victoria McFarland, the Pirates’ Division I-bound studs, continue to mash the ball, striking fear into the hearts of pitchers and infielders around the PSAL. Palase was also terrific pitching Friday against Wagner. Tottenville hosts Construction in a non-league Thursday.

Next: No. 10 Susan Wagner (April 27, 4 p.m.)

2. St. Joseph by the Sea (5-0) (2)

The Vikings head to Herkimer to play four games in the Mudville Softball tournament including upstate power Mechanicville and a potential state semifinal preview against two-time defending Monsignor Martin champion St. Mary’s of Lancaster. The tough competition comes at the right time after Sea’s game vs. rival Moore Catholic was rained out Saturday.

Next: @ St. Joseph Hill (April 25, 3 p.m.)

3. James Madison (3-0) (3)

Outside of a non-league loss to St. Joseph by the Sea, Madison hasn’t really been challenged. Heck, even getting a game in has been a problem for the Knights with all the rain. The stretch run of their schedule will be loaded with a league game against Tottenville and some strong non-leagues.

N
ext: Bushwick (April 27, 4 p.m.)

4. Archbishop Molloy (4-0) (4)

Maureen Rosenbaum has the luxury of picking between co-aces Maria Palmeri and Victoria Goldbach for Monday’s first meeting with St. Francis Prep, but there hasn’t been a debate over who Molloy’s hottest hitter has been. That’s freshman Taylor Moss, who had six RBIs and grand slam in a win over St. Edmund last week.

Next: No. 6 St. Francis Prep (April 18, 3:45 p.m.)

5. Moore Catholic (6-1) (5)

Moore will have to wait for its second crack at St. Joseph by the Sea despite both playing up in Herkimer the next two days. The Mavericks did pick up a solid 4-1 win over St. John Villa thanks to a five-hit, five-strikeout performance by Gianna DeCesare. Her club will get a tough test against Construction, one of the PSAL’s best, Monday.

Next: Notre Dame Academy (April 26, 4 p.m.)

6. St. Francis Prep (3-0) (7)

Molloy has gotten the better of St. Francis Prep the last two seasons, but SFP did beat the Stanners on their Senior Day last season. The Terriers would like nothing more than to get this year’s season series off with a win Monday. Katie Derby will need to continue her dominance in the circle for that to happen.

Next: @ No. 4 Archbishop Molloy (April 18, 3:45 p.m.)

7. Mary Louis (3-1) (9)

Each game seems to bring a different hero for TMLA. In last week’s win over St. Edmund, Julia Canova was 3-for-4 with four RBI and Deirdre Munday added a two-RBI single to continue her hot hitting. Rain kept Mary Louis from playing St. Francis Prep last week, but it gets a stiff test in a makeup game against Bishop Kearney Thursday.

Next: @ Christ the King (April 20, 3:45 p.m.)

8. Francis Lewis (6-0) (10)

The Patriots are not going to wow you with home runs and extra-base hits. They don’t really blow anyone out. But so far Lewis has been steady, taking care of business in league play with aplomb. A big non-league game against Wagner on Saturday could solidify its ranking.

Next: @ New Dorp (April 18, 11 a.m.)

9. Construction (7-1) (8)

If Construction wants to shake off its tough league loss to Richmond Hill, it’s going to have to beat some of the state’s best teams at the Mudville Softball tournament Monday and Tuesday. It doesn’t get easier Thursday when the Red Hawks travel to Tottenville.

Next: @ Newtown (April 28, 4:30 p.m.)

10. Susan Wagner (6-2) (6)

Taylor Sarcone pitched better than the score would indicate in games against Construction and Tottenville last week. That’s a good sign for Wagner heading into the Mudville Softball tournament Monday and Tuesday and a top-notch non-league against Lewis on Saturday.

Next: @ No. 1 Tottenville (April 27, 4 p.m.)

New: None

Dropped out: None

On the bubble: Preston (5-0), St. John Villa (2-3), InTech Academy (8-0), St. Joseph Hill (2-2) and McKee/S.I. Tech (7-2)
