New York City FC were supposed to have trouble finding scoring production without David Villa. Instead, they’ve found a network of players, all with the clinical touch.

Even without Villa, who didn’t start for a third straight game, NYCFC’s newcomers showed why they are MLS’ best with four different goal scorers contributing in the 4-0 clinic against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

“We have to have guys to step in and can perform on the same level [as Villa],” wing back Anton Tinnerholm said. “It feels like for the moment we have great players in the squad and you feel like if players come from the bench, they can make a difference.”

Villa did appear, his first game since March 11, in the second half, but his heroics weren’t needed as in the past thanks to rotational-types like Jo Inge Berget and Ebenezer Ofori.

With NYCFC up 2-0 just before halftime, Berget, who started in Villa’s place, finished a crafty Jesus Medina through-ball with a clinical shot past goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

Coach Patrick Vieira said Berget “deserved” the goal after a hobbled preseason left him not exactly physically or tactically acclimated. Even Wednesday, Berget said he wasn’t 100 percent in his third start with NYCFC.

“When you’re not in the flow, things tend to go the wrong way,” Berget, who joined from Malmo, said. “It’s nice to get that first goal and get that pressure off.”

Berget’s goal was the stamp on what was NYCFC’s most lethal first half this season, which was in part due to Salt Lake looking outplayed and tactically lost. NYCFC buried Salt Lake deep into its final third for much, if not all, of the first half, by dictating tempo and controlling nearly 70 percent possession by halftime.

Ismael Tajouri-Shradi continued his torrid start when he opened the scoring in the 12th minute. His fourth goal in as many games came when he bent a curling effort past frozen goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Then, Maxi Moralez converted a penalty kick later in the half after Justen Glad tackled him in the box before Berget tacked on one more to end the eventful first half.

“We were well positioned,” Vieira said about the first half. “We gave [Salt Lake] a lot of problems [and] created the overload in the wide area.”

Ofori scored in the 70th minute when he connected on Moralez’s goalmouth cross.
