Kevin Durant’s Team USA return wasn’t just impressive.
It was damn near perfect.
Durant came back from a leg injury with a dominant performance in Sunday’s Olympic opener, leading Team USA to a 110-84 Group C rout of Serbia and star Nikola Jokic in Villeneuve-D’ascq, France.

He came off the bench and poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-5 from behind the arc.
“It felt good to make some shots. Everybody played their role pretty well tonight. My role was to come in, provide patience and shot making for the team, go out and knock ’em down,” Durant told reporters in France. “I told coach [Steve Kerr] whatever he needs from me, I’m willing to do anything and adapt to anything. It’s always been fun trying to figure out new roles and adapt to whatever the game tells you.”

Durant — Team USA’s all-time leading Olympic scorer — hit every one he took until the game’s late stages when he’d already put it out of reach.
In his first five-on-five action since April, Durant made his first eight shots.
He scored 21 points in his first nine minutes on the floor, coming in with Team USA trailing and helping LeBron James blow open the game against the dangerous Serbs, who won Olympic silver in 2016.
“That’s the best game we played so far,” James said. “I thought they tested us early. We kind of [lost] our composure. The second group came in and gave us a big lift. KD was phenomenal. It was almost like he never missed a beat or a practice or anything.”
James finished with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

At 39 years, 6 months and 28 days, James became the oldest U.S. man to play on the Olympic basketball team. Steph Curry (36) and Durant (35) also both surpassed Larry Bird’s mark set in 1992.
“[James] puts fear in other teams and I think that goes a long way, the psyche of the game,” Durant said. “Running downhill, making the right plays on the offensive, defensive ends. He was just insane [Sunday]. I’m glad he’s on our team.”
Jrue Holiday had 15 points, Devin Booker had a dozen points and five assists, while Curry and Anthony Edwards added 11 each.

But the star center did have to guard Jokic, the three-time NBA MVP. Jokic finished with 20 points, eight assists and five boards.
Team USA was down 10-2 out of the gate as Serbia hit five of its first six before Kerr called a timeout.

The U.S. was still trailing 20-14 when Durant checked in and changed the game.
Durant sparked a 13-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters to give Team USA a 27-20 lead that it never surrendered.
After Team USA allowed an 8-0 spurt to see the lead cut to 46-44, Durant answered, followed by a steal and layup by Holiday.
Then Durant’s acrobatic fallaway floater capped the half, sending him into the locker room with 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting.
Serbia opened the third on a 10-2 run, but Team USA opened the lead from there, showing growing cohesion as the game drew on.

“Maybe more than any player I’ve been around, when he comes back from a long absence, you don’t notice it,” said Kerr, who coached Durant with the Warriors. “He’s so skilled. He looked like he was in midseason form after not playing in a real basketball game for a couple of months. Pretty incredible.”
