Lindsey Vonn’s last downhill tune-up before her Olympics comeback ended with a shocking scene.
The 41-year-old skier had to be airlifted off a Switzerland course Friday after crashing during the World Cup race in her preparations for her fifth and final Olympics tour next week in Cortina.
The snowy conditions at Crans-Montana wreaked havoc on the competitors, with Vonn being one of three individuals to crash and the race being cancelled after her fall, according to the Associated Press.
“I crashed today in the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee,” Vonn wrote on her Instagram Story, while not specifying if she will be able to race in Italy. “I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams.
“This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over. Thank you for all of the love and support. I will give more information when I have it.
Friday’s race reportedly featured low visibility.
Vonn lost control while making a turn moments after going airborne for a second, with the 2010 Gold medalist hitting the snow and then dangerously skidding toward the netting.
She posted the fastest first-checkpoint time earlier in the race, per the AP.

Vonn eventually got up after receiving medical attention and walked away gingerly, taking weight off her left knee and using her poles to steady herself. She then clicked her skis back on but stopped to check her left knee. @ViaplayVinter/XHer momentum led Vonn right into the netting and she ultimately got tangled in the webbing.
Vonn received medical attention for about five minutes before she finally stood up while using her skis for support.
She eventually moved around a little on her skis before leaning over to grab her left knee.
Vonn’s first Olympic race is the women’s downhill on Feb. 8. She was also planning on competing in the super-G and the new team combined event at the Games. @ViaplayVinter/XVonn later received airlift support to remove her from the course, with a group of helpers surrounding her before being lifted off the course alongside two others.
She had been scheduled to compete in a super-G event Saturday.
“I know she hurt her knee, I talked to her,” International Ski and Snowboard Federation CEO Urs Lehmann told reporters, per the AP. “I don’t know if it’s really heavy and (if) she won’t miss the Olympics. Let’s wait for what the doctors are saying.”
The race was later canceled after three of the first six racers crashed. @ViaplayVinter/XIt’s not yet known what this injury will mean for Vonn at the Cortina Olympics with the Women’s downhill skiing event scheduled for Feb. 8, along with training sessions in advance.
She reportedly also will compete in the super-G and team combined event.
Vonn retired in 2019 after a storied career that placed her among the greatest skiers of all time, having won three Olympic medals plus two Gold medals in the World Championships.
