This is not what Olympic dreams are made of.
On Thomas van der Plaetsen’s first long jump attempt at the Olympic decathlon, the 30-year-old pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury, taking a second to test his leg before his jump.
Going through with the jump was a mistake. Van der Plaetsen fell to the sandpit in pain after hyperextending his knee.
It was an awkward fall and it did some damage. The Belgian decathlete was taken out of the stadium in a wheelchair.
“It didn’t look good,” commentator Martin Gillingham said of the fall. “He aborted the first take-off, walked rather gingerly back feeling the back of his hamstring and then went again. At the point of take-off, it just didn’t happen. All the pressure is going on the take-off leg. It’s desperately unfortunate.”
Van der Plaetsen had to be escorted out of the stadium by wheelchair. APThe long jump was the second of 10 events in the decathlon after the 100m dash. Next up is shot put, high jump and 400m, before the decathletes compete in the hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m Thursday.
Van der Plaetsen had to be escorted out of the stadium by wheelchair. APVan der Plaetsen – who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2014 – was a long-shot to medal at the Tokyo Games. He won the European Championship decathlon in 2016 and finished eighth at the 2016 Olympics.
