Elbows are not supposed to look like that.

Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan appeared to dislocate his elbow in gruesome fashion when he was overwhelmed by the barbell during the men’s 77-kilogram competition on Wednesday at the Rio Olympics.

As Karapetyan attempted to lift 195 kilograms in the clean and jerk, his left elbow popped out and he screamed in agony.

The 20-year-old was in medal contention before the horrific injury.

Karapetyan was helped off the platform in tears by members of his coaching team and rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, with a saline drip attached.

The painful scene echoed a graphic injury from earlier in the Olympics: French gymnast Samir Ait Said snapped his left leg when he landed awkwardly on a practice vault.
