Now they’re the 2021 Olympics.
The Tokyo Olympics have been rescheduled amid the coronavirus pandemic — to almost exactly a year after the originally planned date.
The opening ceremony will take place on July 23, 2021, Tokyo organizers announced Monday.
“The schedule for the games is key to preparing for the games,” Tokyo organizing committee president Yoshiro Mori said. “This will only accelerate our progress.”
The International Olympic Committee and Japanese organizers agreed last week to postpone the games because of the ongoing outbreak.
The games were initially set to open this July 24 and close on Aug. 9. Now, the closing ceremony will occur on Aug. 8, 2021.
The cost of rescheduling will be “massive,” according to local reports — with Japanese taxpayers bearing the brunt, according to Mori and organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto.
