MILAN — From Miracle to Monumental.

The United States has a new men’s hockey team to cherish, after the Americans finally took down Almighty Canada with a 2-1 win in overtime Sunday to capture the country’s third Olympic gold medal — and first in 46 years.

They did it, and they did it in style. This collection of U.S.-born players proved they are the best in the world.

There was nothing miraculous about it. This was the expectation.

MILAN — Team USA received a congratulatory phone call from President Donald Trump after its 2-1 win over Canada to take gold in men’s hockey for the first time since 1980.

“He just spoke to the group expressing how proud he was of the group and congratulating everybody on the win,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “Obviously this game in a lot of ways was an inspiration to our country.

“I can’t tell you how many texts I’ve received over the last day or so about watch parties at 8 in the morning. I think from a viewership standpoint in the United States, there were a lot of people paying attention, the president included.”

Jack Hughes became an American sports hero on Sunday afternoon — and he couldn’t be prouder to represent the Stars and Stripes. 

Hughes, 24, drained the game-winning goal to lift Team USA over Canada, 2-1, in an overtime instant-classic that secured the country’s first gold medal in Olympic men’s hockey since 1980.

After the game, Hughes smiled through blood and broken teeth as he reflected on the historic achievement, emphasizing how happy he was to bring glory back to the States.

Connor Hellebuyck pulled off the save of the Olympic tournament, and Team USA went on to capture its first gold medal in men's ice hockey since 1980.

The Winnipeg Jets goalie made a crazy paddle stop on Team Canada defenseman Devon Toews in the second period of a tie game, before Devils star Jack Hughes eventually sealed the victory with a truly golden goal in 3-on-3 overtime.

Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and the reigning Hart Trophy winner as league MVP, sprawled back through the crease to deny Toews' open-net look from short range to preserve a 1-1 tie in the third period.

Vincent Trocheck didn't mask his emotions after the gold-medal game, after Team USA killed off three more penalties — including more than a minute of 5-on-3 in the second period — to remain perfect at the Olympics.

“I’m pretty f–king proud, I’ll be honest," Trocheck told reporters. "Yeah, we heard all the talk, that we shouldn’t be here. … We were able to come here and we had a job to do, and it was to be good penalty kill guys, faceoff guys, character guys. We took that role and we ran with it.”

The United States honored late Team USA and NHL star Johnny Gaudreau after defeating Canada in Sunday’s gold medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics. 

Draped in the Stars and Stripes, American teammates paraded Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey around the ice in a heartwarming tribute after a thrilling 2-1 overtime triumph.

They then brought Gaudreau’s daughter, Noa, and oldest son, Johnny, onto the ice for the team photo.

It's an image that will stick with Team USA's hockey history forever.

There were plenty of other moments and saves from Connor Hellebuyck during their gold-medal game win over Canada, but this one, less than two minutes into the third period to keep the game tied at 1, was his signature one.

Toews, a defenseman who was also beat on the Matt Boldy goal back in the first period, had a wide open net until Hellebuyck stretched his stick across the crease to make a save. Hellebuyck finished with 41 saves Sunday, and Jack Hughes, who scored the overtime winner, described the Jets goaltender as the United States' best player against Canada.

That moment with Toews, the stick and the improbable save was certainly a major reason why.
