Lee’s father, John, who was paralyzed in a tree-trimming accident in 2019, and dozens of other family members and friends were shown in a video posted by reporter Gia Vang of KARE-11 in Minneapolis erupting with joy Thursday when it was announced that Suni Lee had won an Olympic gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition in Tokyo.

With superstar Simone Biles opting out of the team and individual all-around competitions for mental health reasons, the 18-year-old Lee — already the first Hmong American Olympian in US history — became the fifth consecutive US woman to win the event dating back to 2004.

The Minnesota Lynx, Twins, Vikings, Wild and Timberwolves all tweeted out congratulations to Lee soon after her gold medal-winning performance.
