The Winter Olympics hockey quarterfinals are here.

USA vs. Sweden puck drops at 3:10 p.m. ET.

Slovakia beat Germany, 6-2, on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals. Canada beat Czechia 3-2 in OT to advance and Finland won an improbable comeback thriller 3-2 in OT against Switzerland.

Connor Hellebuyck is expected to be back in net for Team USA in their heavyweight matchup against Sweden.

USA wins a thriller

The United States men’s hockey team is marching on. 

International hockey rules did its thing and awarded Team USA the toughest route to the gold medal game at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, but the Americans cleared their first hurdle with a 2-1 overtime win over Sweden Wednesday night at Santagiulia Arena. 

Quinn Hughes’ winner booked a semifinal meeting with Slovakia for the U.S.

Off a turnover, Sweden kept the puck in the offensive zone. But Hellebuyck and defenseman Jacob Slavin made consecutive poke checks to keep the biscuit out of harm's way. Slavin was down on the ice as he swiped the puck away. Wild sequence there.

But the U.S. still leads 1-0. Plenty of chances for both teams in the first half of the period, but things haven't changed. Connor Hellebuyck has 25 saves with less than nine minutes to go in the third.

Brock Faber with a good stick

Sweden did a great job moving the puck on an attempt to get a shot on the back door, but Brock Faber used to stick to knock a pass out of play. U.S. gets a much-needed kill to keep the game 1-0.

USA goes to the penalty kill

USA takes lead into second intermission

The Americans couldn't convert on a late power play and take a 1-0 lead into the third period.

If they can hold on in the final 20 minutes, they'll advance to a semifinal matchup against Slovakia.
