Dion Waiters had 17 points, Kris Joseph and James Southerland each had 15, and No. 5 Syracuse beat Manhattan 92-56 last night at the Carrier Dome in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

The Orange were 22 of 38 (57.9 percent) in the opening period, 7 of 13 from beyond the arc, with Joseph hitting 3 of 4 to go over 1,000 points in his career. Kidani Brutus had 15 points to lead the Jaspers (1-1).

The Orange (2-0) will play Albany (1-1) at home tonight.

UConn 78, Wagner 66

In Storrs, Conn., Shabazz Napier scored 21 points and No. 4 Connecticut extended Division I’s longest winning streak to 13 games.

Jeremy Lamb added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (2-0). Latif Rivers scored 11 points for Wagner (1-1).

Old Dominion 77, LIU 69

In Norfolk, Va., Michael Culpo scored 15 points to lead Long Island (0-2), which was edged by Old Dominion in the first round of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Tipoff.

Furman 62, Columbia 58

In Morningside Heights, Columbia (0-2) got 16 points from Brian Barbour, but squandered leads of 30-19 at halftime and 46-40 with 7:30 remaining.

Virginia Tech 91, Monmouth 46

In Blacksburg, Va., Monmouth (0-2), led by 12 points from Ed Waite, was overmatched by Virginia Tech in the opening round of the preseason NIT.
