SARATOGA SPRINGS – Trainer Joe Orseno, who handles the potent Stronach Stable here at the Spa, has a pair of dangerous runners going today: King Ruckus in the sixth race at six furlongs and Black Mystery in the eighth at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Both are fresh and fit, and both will be a price.

King Ruckus, a 9-year-old gelding who’s earned nearly $1 million, hasn’t raced since April and shows just two workouts since then. Black Mystery last raced June 30 and shows just one breeze.

But Orseno says not to worry, both horses will come out firing.

“I freshened up my horses for this meet,” he said yesterday morning. “I do a lot of open, controlled galloping to get them ready. I don’t expect them to need a race. I like to give my horses four weeks between races, so they might not have a chance to race here again. So they better be ready.”

King Ruckus, a veteran sprinter who’s earned nearly $1 million, shows several good efforts in his past performances coming off a layoff and can win from on or off the pace.

“He’s a solid horse who runs good fresh,” Orseno said.

Since being shifted from dirt to grass her last four starts, Black Mystery was third by a neck, won two in a row and then was second, beaten less than a length by Emanating, who ran in yesterday’s Test Stakes here.

“Ever since we put her on turf she’s blossomed,” Orseno said. “In her last start she just got beat by a really nice filly. Up here I’ve been able to gallop her on turf (downstate only stakes horses can train over the lawn) and she’s been much happier. I expect a big effort.”

A good indication that Orseno’s horses will have an impact on this meet came in Thursday’s third race when he saddled Yodelman going 11/8 miles.

Making his first start in nearly seven weeks, Yodelman dueled for the lead three wide around the first turn, opened up 5 lengths through a half-mile in a blazing :45.4, was caught by favored Andersonville in midstretch but battled back gamely to finish third at 4-1, beaten a length and a neck. If he’d drawn inside he would have won.

“We can’t have too many days like that,” Orseno said, “but we came up ready to run and are going to win our share.”
