YANKEE NOTES

It was one and done for Carl Pavano last night.

The rehabbing Yankee right-hander worked one inning for Double-A Trenton, but didn’t make it out for the second.

Pavano was held back due to tightness in his triceps. His last rehab start was curtailed after six innings due to tightness in his right forearm and biceps.

He is to be evaluated at the Stadium today by Dr. Stuart Hershon, and his return is murkier than ever.

“I think it stops [Pavano’s momentum] short,” manager Joe Torre said. “It looks like back to Tampa [for more rehab] to me.”

Pavano last pitched in the majors on June 27, and he’s been sidetracked by a number of issues: rotator cuff tendinitis, back problems and a sore buttocks.

As insurance for their uncertain outfield situation, the Yankees are close to inking Terrence Long to a minor-league contract and adding him to the 40-man roster.

The club recently designated Triple-A infielder Felix Escalona for assignment and put him on waivers, knocking him off the 40-man.

The 30-year-old Long, a lefty hitter, played with the Royals last season and was recently released by Cincinnati’s Triple-A club.

Shawn Chacon’s teammates said his left shin bruise was so bad, he probably shouldn’t have started on Tuesday. Torre and Chacon said he should be able to make his start on Sunday, but the pitcher admitted the bruise is “pretty bad.”

He will see a doctor for more tests today.

Gary Sheffield (contusion and sprain of the left wrist and hand) caught some balls during BP for the first time yesterday, and Torre thought he might take some dry swings with a bat soon.

Sheffield told his manager he’s feeling better. He told a PR person he has no timetable for swinging a bat. He’s eligible to return this weekend. Torre told him the Yanks would want him to play in at least one rehab game.
