Pedro’s last stand
As written about yesterday, the Mets have plenty of competition for the final spot of their rotation.
And barring a major change of thinking, that competition will not include Pedro Martinez. But Martinez isn’t giving up on his hopes of being on a major-league roster this season.
According to a report in the Spanish-language newspaper Hoy, Martinez is hitting between 88-92 mph on the radar gun in preparation for the World Baseball Classic, where he will pitch for the Dominican Republic team. Martinez will make the team’s first exhibition start on March 3 against the Marlins.
“Pedro was working really well, he threw the ball like normal and he showed good physical condition,” Dominican team staff member Rafael Mateo told the paper.
“Pedro finds himself in good physical condition, and it’s evident that he has been working hard in his preparation for the upcoming season,”
The Dodgers, Pirates and Indians have reportedly shown interest in Martinez, but he has not been given an official offer.
