No screen clutter, no verbal stylings designed by John Sterling in tribute to John Sterling. Both TV and radio, yesterday, did a good, old- fashioned job of telling the story of David Cone’s perfect game.

With Don Larsen in Yankee Stadium for Yogi Berra Day, Ch. 5 made the best of the occasion by bringing Larsen into the booth during the seventh inning.

On WABC Radio, John Sterling, who often becomes so enamored with his signature “Thuhhh Yankees win!” call that special game-endings can be lost to self-promotion, instead reacted to the final out by hollering that Cone had just pitched a perfect game.

And Ch. 5, already running late due to a 40-minute rain delay, stayed even later so that Suzyn Waldman could chat live with Cone. Good stuff, all around.
