Contrary to what the NBA Finals would have you believe, in most sports you need more than one star to win games.

Just ask the 5-0 Liberty, who, with their best start since the 1997 inaugural season, have four players averaging double figures in points.

“We don’t need to have any one star to win,” said guard Erin Thorn, who is leading the team with 14.8 points per game. “If they’re going to take away one option, we have four other [scoring options] out there on the court.”

This was clearly evident in Tuesday night’s win against the previously undefeated Indiana Fever, in which the Liberty had three players share game-high scoring honors: second-year forward Catherine Kraayeveld, third-year point guard Loree Moore, and reserve Ashley Battle, all of whom had 15. Adding to the 78-67 victory over Indiana, the best defensive team in the league the last two years running, were rookie center Jessica Davenport with 12 points and Thorn with 10.

“Each night, someone different has stepped up,” coach Pat Coyle said yesterday after practice. “I think that’s a good thing.”

And the Liberty are going to need every bit of fortitude they can summon when they face defending WNBA champion Detroit tonight at the Garden. The Shock are the only other undefeated team in the league, and Coyle and her crew are not taking the game lightly.

“Detroit is terrific,” Coyle said. “They can hurt you in so many different ways.”

One better than the Liberty, the Shock have five players averaging double figures in points. And just like the Libs, none of them is in the top 15 in the league.

“It’s always a tough fight against Detroit,” Thorn said.

“We just have to approach the game in the same manner we did the first five,” Coyle added. “But I feel pretty good about this team right now.”
