After waiting around for 10 hours, Lindsay Davenport needed just 46 minutes to roll through her quarterfinal match against Shinobu Asagoe last night, 6-1 6-1.

Davenport got to Flushing Meadows at 9 a.m. yesterday, only to wait around all day as the rain fell, canceling the day card. Davenport’s match was reassigned to the night card to the smaller Armstrong Stadium, where about 400 people showed up. More than 20,000 had watched her take out Venus Williams two days before.

Davenport will face Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in Friday’s semifinal. In the other semifinal, Jennifer Capriati, looking for her first Open crown, takes on Elena Dementieva.

That’s two Russians and two Americans in the final four, with the Americans the favorites. Capriati has never lost to Dementieva in three bouts, and Davenport is the hottest player right now, winning 22 straight matches.

“I really wanted to play,” said Davenport, noting the possibility of rain today. “I didn’t want to come back out here [today].”
