LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Most of the final works for Saturday’s 137th Kentucky Derby were completed yesterday over a sloppy, sealed surface at Churchill Downs, with more rain forecast for today. After expected clearing tomorrow and Thursday, showers are forecast for the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, with isolated thunderstorms and a high of 77 degrees called for on Derby Day.

Brilliant Speed, a turf horse who won the Blue Grass last out over the Polytrack at Keeneland, breezed five furlongs on the main track in 1:01 1/5, galloping out six in 1:15. The drill was considerably faster than the works Brilliant Speed had been turning in over the training track at Palm Meadows.

Nehro, the “wiseguy horse” for this year’s Derby after fast-closing seconds in the Louisiana and Arkansas Derbys, beaten a neck both times, breezed over a half-mile in :51 1/5, galloping out five furlongs in 1:05 2/5.

“Saturday will be three races in six weeks and we just hope he continues to progress,” trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Santiva, a tough-trip ninth as the favorite in the Blue Grass, worked four furlongs in :50 1/5. He galloped out five in 1:02 4/5 and six in 1:17 1/5.

Watch Me Go, who upset the Tampa Bay Derby at 43-1 before finishing sixth in the Illinois Derby as the 2-1 favorite, worked five furlongs in 1:02, out in 1:15 and 1:29 1/5.
