Is Randaroo the second coming of Xtra Heat, the freakishly fast filly who emerged from Maryland to become one of the top sprinters in the world?
The Laurel Park-based 2-year-old daughter of Gold Case certainly gave a good imitation of Xtra Heat yesterday at the Big A, scoring gate-to-wire by 5 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3, $150,000 Valley Stream Stakes. Her time for the six furlongs was a sparkling 1:09.2.
Trained by Tony Dutrow, Randaroo ran her record to 2-for-2. In her first start at Delaware Park, she led all the way to win by 10 1/4, sizzling 5 ½ furlongs in 1:04.3.
“Here’s an easy quote: ‘As advertised,’ ” Dutrow said. “I came up here hoping she wouldn’t regress off her first race. At the same time, you can’t help but be confident.”
Favored at 4-5 in the field of eight, Randaroo broke on top and dueled with 7-2 Fast Cookie through solid splits of :22.3 and :45.3. She kicked clear turning for home and was ridden out to the wire by John Velazquez.
Randaroo paid $3.70, topping a $33.40 exacta with longshot House Party closing for second. Fast Cookie held for third.
