YANKEE NOTES

The Boss may not have seen enough of Esteban Loaiza yet, but apparently the Rangers might have.

An industry source told The Post yesterday that Loaiza – who is rumored to be a Texas trade target – might not be going anywhere because “the Rangers didn’t get a good report,” on the right-hander.

“The report they got from other organizations was he’s a little bit lazy,” the source said. “He needs to be pushed. And his stuff is not what it used to be. He’s lost a few miles off his fastball.”

In yesterday’s Post, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said that he might veto a deal because he hasn’t seen enough of Loaiza, who was acquired from the White Sox for Jose Contreras.

Loaiza (9-6, 5.07) is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts in Pinstripes. He’s scheduled to start against the Angels today.

The 32-year-old won 21 games and was the AL Cy Young runner-up last season and an All-Star this year, but scouts have reportedly said a reliance on his cut fastball has led to a drop in velocity.

Joe Torre said yesterday that the Yankees would stick with six starters until the end of the month, meaning Loaiza will remain in the rotation if he stays in The Bronx.

Steve Karsay was at Yankee Stadium before the game but left for a flight to join Triple-A Columbus. He was there to speak with Torre as well as work out.

He’s scheduled to hurl today for the first of three appearances with the Clippers in order to gauge himself against better competition.

“It doesn’t hurt to have a few more extra innings,” Karsay said. “My stuff is there.”

Karsay is tentatively slated to throw again on Monday and Wednesday, and then join the Yankees in Toronto sometime between Aug. 26-29. He’ll throw at least one bullpen for pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, and then the Yankees will likely activate him on Sept. 1.

He was asked whether one month was enough to prove he deserves to be on the playoff roster.

“I’m not worried about it,” he said. “However it plays out, it plays out.”

Torre said one month is more than enough time.
