Rangers assistant GM Don Maloney was dispatched to Montreal Saturday night to scout Mighty Ducks winger Petr Sykora, The Post has learned.

Multiple sources have told The Post that Rangers GM Glen Sather and Anaheim GM Brian Burke are having ongoing conversations about a deal that would send the 29-year-old winger – who registered a goal and an assist in 14:18 of ice on Saturday against the Canadiens – to Broadway, though it is not clear what the Mighty Ducks are demanding in return.

Sykora, who fell out of favor early with first-year coach Randy Carlyle, also has attracted the interest of the Canadiens and Bruins, if not the Senators, as well, sources report. With 68 days of the NHL calendar having ticked off, Sykora’s remaining 2005-06 cap charge equals $1,964,435.

The Rangers, who are 9-1-1 in their last 11 and open a four-game homestand tomorrow night against the Canucks, have approximately $4.5M of cap space available. That, of course, is prior to subtracting the contracts of any players currently on the roster who might go to the Mighty Ducks in a trade.

Burke, who faced earlier cap issues that prompted him to trade Steve Rucchin (to the Rangers), Mike Leclerc and Sergei Fedorov, is seeking to make an equal-value hockey trade for Sykora, who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Whether old cronies Sather and Burke can agree on what that equal value actually is, will determine whether the Blueshirts pull off the deal.
