YANKEE NOTES

The Boss may not have seen enough of Esteban Loaiza yet, but apparently the Rangers have heard plenty.

A source told The Post yesterday that Loaiza – who is rumored to be a Texas trade target – might not be going anywhere because “the Rangers didn’t get a good report.”

“The report they got from other organizations was he’s a little bit lazy,” the source said. “He needs to be pushed.

“And his stuff is not what it used to be. He’s lost a few miles off his fastball.”

In yesterday’s Post, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said he might veto a deal because he hasn’t seen enough of Loaiza, who was acquired from Chicago.

Loaiza (9-6, 5.07) is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts in Pinstripes. He’ll start today.

The 32-year-old righty won 21 games and was the AL Cy Young runner-up last season and an All-Star this year, but scouts have reportedly said a reliance on his cut fastball has led to a drop in velocity.

Joe Torre said that the Yankees would stay with six starters until the end of the month, meaning Loaiza will stay in the rotation if he remains in The Bronx.

Gary Sheffield (bursitis, pulled trapezius) decided against having multiple cortisone shots in his left shoulder until the next off day, which is Aug. 30. Sheffield declined to speak with reporters before and after the Yanks’ 5-0 loss to Angels at Stadium last night.

Torre said Jason Giambi (benign tumor, groin strain) would begin taking BP “hopefully next week.”

Steve Karsay (shoulder) was at Stadium before the game but left for a flight to join Triple-A Columbus. He was here to speak with Torre as well as work out.

He’s scheduled to hurl today for the first of three Triple-A appearances in order to gauge himself against better competition.

“It doesn’t hurt to have a few more extra innings,” Karsay said. “My stuff is there.”

Karsay is tentatively slated to throw again Monday and Wednesday.
