Spanish giant Real Madrid signed German World Cup star Mesut Ozil, the club’s official website confirmed Tuesday.
The 21-year-old midfielder was the subject of a battle between Real Madrid and English sides Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal for his services.
He will reportedly join the La Liga club for a fee close to $20.6 million (€16 million).
Ozil, who joined German side Werder Bremen in January 2008 for just over $5 million, impressed during the World Cup this summer, in which Germany finished third.
“His unique touch, unmatched individual technique, excellent ball control and deadly last pass make the German midfielder one of the brightest up-and-coming stars in European football,” read a statement on Real’s website about Ozil, who scored 13 goals in 60 matches for Bremen.
On Friday, his German club turned down a nearly $15 million offer, but Real later upped its bid.
