SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Bullet is back. Preakness winner Red Bullet, racing against time to make the Aug. 26 Travers, drilled five furlongs yesterday morning over the Oklahoma training track here in a sharp 1:00.4, galloping out six panels in 1:14.
It was the first recorded workout for the Unbridled colt since before the July 9 Dwyer at Belmont Park, in which he finished a dull third. Red Bullet was diagnosed with ulcers and a viral infection after that race, which forced him to miss last Sunday’s $1 million Haskell at Monmouth.
Since Red Bullet arrived at the Spa last Saturday, Orseno has been sending him to the main track for open gallops, but his status was still day to day.
“I’m pleased to see him back, and very relieved,” trainer Joe Orseno said. “He went the last quarter (mile) in :23 and change. That’s skipping, and he galloped out good.
“If he had come back with his head dragging, it would indicate he still wasn’t 100 percent, but he’s back on course for the Travers. He didn’t lose a lot of fitness because he’s such an athletic horse. We’re ecstatic.”
Orseno, who postponed Red Bullet’s workout several times, said, “I don’t know if it was a make or break work because the Travers isn’t a make or break situation. There are other races down the line, and the Stronachs (owners of Red Bullet) have got another Travers horse (trainer Tino Attard’s Milwaukee Brew, a fast-closing third in the Haskell). So we’re in a good spot.
“That’s a powerful entry. I hope they run 1-2.”
