The Red Bulls’ injury-plagued defense has been struggling, so coach Bruce Arena shook up his backline yesterday by trading left back Todd Dunivant to Toronto for defender Kevin Goldwaite.

With Dunivant, a 26-year-old National Team player, and right back Hunter Freeman both hurt, the Red Bulls have allowed 11 goals in their last four games.

The 24-year-old Goldwaite, a similar, but cheaper and less experienced version of Dunivant, is a good attacker and crosser, if an inconsistent marker. He makes $31,000 to Dunivant’s $95,000, and the money saved could go to acquiring yet another defender, like World Cup vet Tony Sanneh or ex-MetroStar Chris Leitch.

Mariano Fernandez of Argentina had an injury-abbreviated trial, and Leitch and Sanneh both are in camp but unsigned.
