If the Red Bulls want to make MLS Cup, they’ll have to do the impossible.
After finding themselves in the league’s biggest hole, the Red Bulls will somehow have to overcome their disastrous 3-0 loss in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Finals against Atlanta United unless they want to risk spoiling such a promising season.
No team has ever advanced down 3-0 heading into the second leg in an aggregate series. The Supporters’ Shield winners could sour a historic season with an all too familiar postseason dud that has marred this franchise for its entire existence.
But that isn’t stalling the Red Bulls.
They’re still determined to change the old disappointing narrative on Thursday night in the second leg against Atlanta United at Red Bull Arena, where the Red Bulls will need to score at least three goals to have a shot at the cup.
Coach Chris Armas seemed optimistic about turning the Red Bulls’ fortunes around, citing the team’s most recent home playoff win against the Columbus Crew a round earlier.
“We are feeding off that we just did it in our own building,” Armas said, recalling the 3-0 win in the second leg against the Crew on Nov. 11. “We have been feeding off of that for mostly every single game of this season we scored first. We are feeding off of that we are champions of the league and are Supporter’s Shield champions. We are feeding off that we didn’t make it this far to just come this far.”
An early goal would set the tempo for the Red Bulls. They’ve scored first in all but three home games this season.
“I think it is pretty clear that we have to come out and be aggressive and try and get on the front foot as early as possible,” midfielder Alex Muyl said. “The task isn’t going to be easy, but it is clear, at least.”
