Hercules Gomez and Sebastian Giovinco scored second-half goals and Toronto FC clinched an MLS playoff spot for the first time in franchise history with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over the visiting Red Bulls.

Shaun Wright-Phillips came off the bench to score his first goal for the Red Bulls in the 86th minute.

The Red Bulls fell to 16-10-6 this season (5-7-4 on the road), but still lead the Eastern Conference with 54 points with two games left.

Giovinco, who entered the game as a sub in the second half after playing Tuesday for Italy in a European Championship qualifying win over Norway, scored what turned out to be the winner in the 79th minute.

“[Giovinco] comes on, he makes one play and makes it 2-0 and ends the game almost,” Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch said. “It was a great goal.”
