Even striker Thierry Henry admits championships are won with defense, not offense. And though the Red Bulls’ attack is white-hot, they will be without injured defensive anchor Wilman Conde for a month starting with tonight’s match against high-scoring San Jose and star striker Chris Wondolowski (7:00, MSG Plus).

Henry became the first player to earn three straight MLS Player of the Week awards with his seven goals in that span, one shy of the league record. But he said he is far more concerned with the eight scores the Red Bulls have coughed up this year.

“The aim is to do better, play better,” Henry said. “I’m not going to talk about how many goals we score.

“We all know about Wondolowski. I was on the bench in the playoffs when he killed us.’’

After finishing atop the Eastern Conference two years ago, the Red Bulls were beaten by visiting San Jose 3-1 in the conference finals with Wondolowski scoring the deciding goal. Now they have to face the league’s two-time leading scorer without Conde and Teemu Tainio, though Dax McCarty and Markus Holgersson are expected to play.
